Summer day camps are where unforgettable childhood memories are made—filled with sunshine, laughter, and nonstop adventure. For school-age kids, each day brings something new, from games and outdoor exploration to creative activities and new friendships that can last a lifetime.
“Nature camps are a mixture of themed activities and general camp fun, designed to encourage kids to learn about, enjoy, and respect the natural world,” said Morgan Brown, nature school and camps supervisor. “Campers go on hikes and play games, make crafts, and meet our animal ambassadors up close.”
Currently available are Nature Discoverers and Nature Teen camps.
Geared to those ages 3 to 5, the morning-only Nature Discoverers includes exploration of the woods and fields around Hickory Knolls Discovery Center as well as time spent making crafts and engaging in fun and educational games. These week-long camps take place from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays through Fridays throughout June and July.
The newly expanded Nature Teen Camp is designed for kids 11 to 14, and includes the opportunity to visit natural areas, play games, visit the nearby Otter Cove Aquatic Park, and conduct science experiments. Participants can also enjoy special themed activities during camps, which run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art Week takes place June 8 through June 12, while the adventurous may opt for Survival Week July 13 through July 17.
A wide assortment of sports camps take place this summer.
Working with the park district is Hot Shot Sports, which offers multi sports, soccer, basketball, flag football and baseball/softball camps in week-long programs throughout the season. Offerings are geared to participants as young as 3 for the “mini” camps and up to 12 years old. Camps take place primarily at Timber Trails Park, with basketball at Pottawatomie Community Center.
Other popular options include soccer camps from Chicago Fire, said Andrew Nelson, athletics supervisor.
Chicago Fire camps, which take place at Sportsplex, accommodate kids from ages 2 to 12 and will refine players’ technical skills and intensify their love of the game. Two-hour camps take place June 15 through June 19 and July 27 through July 31. A full-day option is also available for players ages 6 to 12 both weeks.
Day camps at Pottawatomie offer a fun, fast-paced environment, said Jaz Lara, who oversees the programs.
“Campers experience summer like they never have before, with theater, exciting crafts, or outdoor excursions,” she said. “Campers can also explore new interests.”
Currently open are camps at Sportsplex for those in first and second grade as well as those in third and fourth. Camps take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday all summer long.
