A sprawling 38-acre space along the Fox River, Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles is an amazing spot for outdoor exploration, relaxation and time spent with friends and family.
“Many people know Pottawatomie Park for its popular attractions, but there are so many hidden gems,” said Erika Combs, public relations and marketing manager for the St. Charles Park District. “The park offers unique experiences that encourage families to get outside, stay active, and create lasting memories.”
To get a bird’s eye view of the verdant surroundings and waterway, visitors to the park can start by climbing the tower of the striking wooden Historic Pavillion that sits adjacent to the busy Fox.
Other opportunities for fitness include the opportunity to utilize the free equipment in Greenwald Plaza located in the center of the park. Eight pieces of equipment, from a pendulum station to a chest press, focus on strengthening as users work against their own body weight. These pieces are designed to be used by those of varying ability, with many accessible to individuals in wheelchairs.
Activities for groups, such as sand volleyball, tennis and pickleball, are also abundant. And the 9-hole Pottawatomie Golf Course in the north end of the park also keeps visitors active and having fun as does the golf simulator that allows golfers to virtually play some of the most famed courses in the world.
At the River View Miniature Golf, individuals can test their aim and precision along an 18-hour course, or opt to rent yard game equipment. For a small fee, people can rent two sets of baggo or bocce balls. Bags boards are just nearby.
Fun for the little ones include two playgrounds, including one that centers on sensory experiences and includes a fully accessible wheelchair swing.
Kayaks and boats available for rent allow visitors to take in the park from an entirely different vantage point. Rentals of single-person kayaks or peddle boats, which can accommodate up to four are available from the launch behind the mini golf course. Both may be used between the railroad trestle on the southern end and the no wave buoys to the north.
Another way to experience the Fox and learn about its impact on the city is by hopping on a paddlewheel riverboat. Public cruises last about an hour and depart regularly, giving those aboard the opportunity to witness more tranquil parts of the river and learn about the wildlife that lives in its waters and those that frequent its shores.
The sizable community center hosts a number of classes and programs for all ages, and nearby Swanson Pool, complete with water slides, lily pad rope walk and sand area, is the perfect place to spend the day when the temperatures start to climb.
And then there’s simply strolling among beautiful landscapes to take a break from the day-to-day. To the west of the community center sit native plant gardens, where visitors can enjoy a moment of calm while learning more about the flora of the Prairie State.
“Pottawatomie Park has something around every corner,” Combs said. “From scenic overlooks and waterfront adventures to inclusive play opportunities and free fitness amenities, there’s always a new hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.”
