It’s a joy to cruise the Fox River on a sunny summer day, taking in the sights on the water and along its banks, but soaking up the passing scenery from aboard an old-fashioned riverboat brings the experience to a whole new level.
This season, the St. Charles Park District is unveiling several brand-new events to be enjoyed on the deck of its paddlewheel riverboat.
“We’re constantly inspired by our guests who cruise with us and are always looking to introduce new and exciting experiences on the riverboat,” said Tera Harvey, manager of cruise operation. “We have an excellent lineup of specialty cruises this summer perfect for large and small group outings.”
Taking place on the last Sunday of the month, now through October, is History Sunday Cruises. Led by docents from the St. Charles History Museum, this river cruise will illuminate the city’s past with live and interactive commentary. The 45-minute cruises take place at 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are open to all ages. Tickets are $14 for those 16 and older and $11 for those 3 to 15.
Community members 21 and older can also experience days gone by with a Roaring River Cruise. Offered from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, this journey down the Fox will feature jazz tunes as played live by local musicians. Volunteers from the history museum will share fascinating tales from the prohibition era, including stories of St. Charles nightlife in the 1920s. Individuals can bring their own wine and beer. Tickets are $30 per person.
Another new event on the horizon is Tiki Tuesday. Taking place from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, this evening excursion will feature island melodies and a taste of the tropics for those seeking to enjoy their own slice of paradise. This event, which is open to those 21 and older, is $24 per person. It is also BYOB.
Harvey is particularly excited about Fishing on the Fox, which is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 4.
“Many guests inquire about fishing from the riverboat, and it just so happens that our Lead Captain, Captain Steve McClone, is a professional fisherman,” Harvey said. “Requests from passengers and Captain Steve’s experience and passion inspired us to offer Fishing on the Fox for the first time.
Open to those 16 and older, the cruise will provide the opportunity to catch and release smallmouth bass from the river’s waters. Participants are asked to bring their own gear, with a maximum of two poles per person. Nets will be available to all on board.
Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss Nature Scoops from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 8. Individuals can enjoy Kimmer’s Ice Cream while Pam Otto, the park district’s resident nature expert, shares her knowledge about the river’s many wild inhabitants. These include beavers and muskrats as well as the eagles and herons that soar above the surface. This all-ages event is $25 a person.
