Hot, sunny days at the pool may feel far off, but the St. Charles Park District is getting ready for just that with the upcoming Aquatics Hiring Fair.
Taking place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 11 at Pottawatomie Community Center, the event will give individuals the chance to learn about open positions at Swanson Pool and Otter Cove Aquatic Park this summer.
“We really enjoy meeting interested applicants face-to-face and giving them an opportunity to learn more about our positions and facilities before the season begins,” said Cayla Greenfield, who manages the aquatics programs. “Attendees can expect a drop-in style event where they can meet and chat with aquatics supervisors, apply for open positions, ask questions about roles and work permits, and even complete onboarding paperwork.”
Teens and others are welcome to come by and learn what positions they may be best suited for as the summer months approach.
Among the roles open to those 15 and older is the role of attendant. Those in this position can opt to work with guest service or concessions, both of which facilitate great visitor experiences.
Those 15 and up can also learn more about becoming a swim lesson instructor. Instructors are required to have a solid knowledge of swimming skills as well as strong interpersonal skills. Candidates also need to be enthusiastic and work well with children.
Another opportunity is that of a Sensory Cove swim instructor, who would work one-on-one with children on the autism spectrum. In addition to swimming knowledge and strong interpersonal skills, instructors should also have the ability to establish a positive rapport and understanding as to when tact and discretion is needed.
Those 16 and older will have the opportunity to learn more about and apply for roles including lifeguard, pool maintenance, and slide attendant. Lifeguards must be certified and display a high degree of emotional maturity and judgment.
“Many people are surprised by how much skill development comes with aquatics roles,” Greenfield said. “Staff gain leadership experience, responsibility, teamwork, and customer service skills that are valuable in any future career. Aquatics positions also offer flexible scheduling, paid training, certification opportunities, and a strong sense of camaraderie. Working in a fun, active environment while making a positive impact on the community is a big perk as well.”
Those new to the facility as well as familiar faces are encouraged to come out to the hiring fair.
“Staff love to see returning staff members to say hi and talk about the upcoming season,” Greenfield added.
