Weekly Event Keeps Kids Busy with Open Gym, Movies, DJ and More
Friday Live is a win-win for families, providing more than three hours of fun and entertainment for children, and a night out for their parents.
For $8 per child, Friday Live gives children the space and flexibility to engage in a multitude of activities from 6:30-10pm every Friday at Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles. Third-sixth graders can look forward to a new theme every week but count on the same activities such as open gym, dance floor, DJ, game rooms and concession stand.
Children also can participate in a Pre-Friday Live event: Dodgeball at Dusk from 5-6:15pm. For Dodgeball only the cost is $5, or $11 for both Dodgeball and Friday Live. The dodgeball games are structured and semi-competitive.
“Friday Live is a great experience for kids to socialize outside of school and for parents to have a night out to themselves, knowing their kids are supervised and having fun,” said Aquatics and Youth Programming Supervisor Steve Gard.
While staff supervises each room, children are free to engage in the activities they prefer at their own pace. They may choose to show off their moves on the dance floor with friends, then shoot hoops in the gym, wander over to the game room and then take a break to eat dinner at the concession stand. The food is sold at affordable prices, including $2 per pizza slice and $1 each for chips, drinks, candy and snacks.
One of the added benefits of the concession stand is teaching children how to manage their money. According to Gard, many parents will give their children a certain amount each month, so they learn how to budget from week to week.
“It gives their kids an opportunity to understand money and how quickly it can go. That’s something not a lot of third through sixth graders have the opportunity to experience,” Gard said.
The Friday Live themes change every week, and for the remainder of the year, attendees can look forward to Comedy Night, an Ice Cream Sundae Party and Ugly Sweater Christmas Party.
No kid will leave with a frown on their face during Comedy Night November 30. Comedies will be playing in the movie room, and staff will tell jokes throughout the evening and may even perform standup for the group. Additionally, interested children can take the stage during open mic to tell jokes.
An Ice Cream Sundae Party is scheduled for December 7 with an added sundae bar at the concession stand. A variety of ice cream and toppings is sure to satisfy every sweet tooth. Sundaes are $2.
To wrap up the year, an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party will be celebrated December 14. The night will be Christmas themed with music, games and prizes for all.
And the fun won’t stop in the New Year. Kids can practice their favorite songs during Karaoke Night January 11; watch magician Gary Kantor wow the crowd during Magic Night January 25, and participate in slimy science projects during Science Night February 1.
Friday Live registration is at the door. Parents must check their children in and out of the event. Pottawatomie is located at 8 North Ave. in St. Charles.
