Enrolling your child in a swim lesson isn’t just about fun, it’s also about developing an incredibly important skill set.
“Swimming is a fundamental life skill that everyone should learn at an early age,” said Cayla Greenfield, who manages aquatic programs for the St. Charles Park District. “It not only ensures safety around water, but it also promotes confidence, builds physical strength, and can be a lifelong activity. Being able to swim can be lifesaving in emergencies, and starting lessons young helps children become comfortable in the water, making learning easier and more enjoyable.”
The park district offers several swim lesson options in a variety of formats for young community members. Lessons take place at both Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Swanson Pool.
The Tadpole program is geared to the youngest participants, from 6 months to 2 years of age. These lessons, which take place with a parent who is also in the water, approach swimming in a playful way with activities, games and songs. Children learn to flutter kick, how to properly enter and exit the water, and basic water safety. This program typically sees 12 students to one instructor.
Swim Academy Prep for those ages 3 to 4 incorporates lively activities, exercises and free play while also building fundamental swim skills, while Swim Academy for those 5 and older more actively focuses on developing technique by moving participants through six levels. Survival skills are also included in the lessons.
Swim Academy Prep is usually a one to three instructor-to-student ratio, while Swim Academy is four students to one instructor.
“Group lessons offer a sense of community and are an excellent way for both children and adults to develop social skills, teamwork, and collaboration, all while progressing together through the course,” Greenfield said.
Private and semi-private lessons are also available for those seeking a more individualized experience. These lessons are also a great option for children who want to more strongly develop their stroke technique.
“Some individuals opt for private lessons if they have specific goals or challenges that need focused instruction,” said Greenfield of the lessons, which are available to those 3 and older. “The park district provides a variety of options to meet the diverse needs of our community.”
Lessons begin the week of June 7 and are available all summer long.
“The lessons are affordable, inclusive, and designed to accommodate swimmers of all skill levels,” Greenfield added. “Our instructors are trained and passionate about making swimming a fun and rewarding experience.”
