There never seem to be enough days in the summer to pack in all the fun to be had. And while Swanson Pool is always the place to go for splish’n good times — thanks to amenities such as the Lily Pad Rope Walk, waterslides and drop slides, activity and lap pools, sand and water play areas, and, of course, The Dive concession stand – special aquatic events throughout the summer take Swanson Pool’s splash-tastic factor to whole new levels.
Up for the challenge of designing, building and navigating boats made entirely of corrugated cardboard and duct tape? Then get your nautical engineering skills ready for the popular “Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race” on Saturday, June 23 from 11 to 11:30am. Open to competitors ages 5 and older, the boats must be able to hold up to four people and paddle across Swanson Pool. Prizes will be awarded for Best Sinking, Team Spirit, Best Dressed and more. Go to www.swansonpool.org for building guidelines.
Boats of a different sort take over the pool on Sunday, June 24, when the kayaks from River View Miniature Golf are launched for “Paddle in the Pool” lessons. Three half-hour sessions, beginning at 9:45am, let people who are new to kayaking get their sea legs under them in the serene Swanson Pool waters. It’s a great way to build confidence and renew kayaking skills before heading out onto the Fox River.
July teems with fun for the whole family. Aquatic dive-bombers ages 3 and older can show off your cannonball skills during the “Biggest Splash Contest” on Wednesday, July 11 from 7 to 8pm. A prize will be awarded to the biggest splasher. Spaces are limited so get to the pool early to register. Artistic skills are the order of the day on Thursday, July 12 (and again on August 9) when Deck Art Day lets poolside Picassos decorate the surrounding deck area. Chalk is provided. Experience the job of a Swanson Pool lifeguard during two “Lifeguard for a Day” opportunities on Tuesday, July 17 and August 7, from 1 to 2pm. Learn skills such as scanning, using a rescue tube, first aid and other safety skills from Swanson Pool’s dedicated water watchers. The return of two other fan-fave events – “Christmas in July” on July 25 and “Sundae Sundays” on July 29 – round out the month, and don’t forget that DJ Night takes place every Tuesday night in July from 7 to 8pm. Bring the family for dancing and games, contests and races.
With just one month left to capitalize on the water fun, August doesn’t disappoint with its newest activity, “Characters Make a Splash” on Wednesday, August 8 from 6:30 to 8:30. Meet super heroes, princesses and monsters! Come dressed as your own favorite action figure and receive a free treat from The Dive concessions. Let the family show off its athletic prowess during “Family Olympics” on Tuesday, August 14 from 7 to 8pm. Participate in a variety of games such as relay races, speed glides, water limbo and jump rope splash to bring home the gold! And “It’s One Big Pool Party!” on Friday, August 17, when Swanson Pool celebrates the best of summer with fun for all ages. Dive for prizes, take part in a hula hoop race, pull together for a tug of war. What better way to start saying goodbye to summer and celebrate going back to school?
