Help your teen beat the doldrums of winter with a variety of events tailored for their age group at the St. Charles Park District’s Underground Teen Center. From petting snakes to participating in a Smash Bros. Tournament, teens will be socializing, smiling and learning with friends.
If your teen has a soft spot for animals, Pizza Party with the Critters is the place to be. From 5:30-7:30pm Thursday, February 21, teens will meet at the Underground, and then travel by bus to Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles. There, teens can meet, pet and learn about a variety of critters including snakes, turtles, salamanders, a bearded dragon and more.
“This new program exposes teens to a number of animals they may not have ever seen up close before and gives them a hands-on learning experience,” said Darby Beasley, Teen Center Director.
Pizza will be provided at the Discovery Center. Pick up is at the Underground. The event is free but please register.
If your teen loves sleepovers with friends, why not try a sleepover at the Teen Center on Friday, February 22? During the Lock-In, teens will be entertained with video games, board games, pizza, arts and crafts and movies from 10pm-7am. Three to four staff members supervise this annual event. The fee is $15 per person.
“The Lock-in is one of our most popular events. The kids just love being able to sleep at the Underground, and parents love knowing they are hanging out in a safe, supervised and positive environment,” Beasley said.
Maybe your teen enjoys passing the time with a challenging game of chess. Have them take part in the free Chess Tournament from 6-9pm Wednesday, March 6, at the Underground. The night will include single elimination tournaments to determine the chess grandmaster. All levels of play are encouraged to attend.
Or if the competition of videos games is your teen’s idea of a good time, have them check out the Smash Bros. Tourney from 6-9pm Saturday, March 16. Players will participate in a double elimination tournament to determine the champion. Winners will receive prizes including game apparel.
There will be novice and pro brackets, so all experience levels are welcome, even spectators. “Even if you don’t want to play, it’s really fun to watch,” Beasley said.
Pizza will be provided as well. The fee is $5 per person.
