Think of it as a reward for being able to see most of winter in the rear view mirror or as a way of getting a jump-start on spring. Either way, a new special event offered by the St. Charles Park District will have kids celebrating the chance to burn off some of that pent up winter energy and parents grateful for the opportunity to just get out for a night on their own.
This win-win situation, called “Funky Fit Friday,” is scheduled for March 9 from 6 to 8:30 PM at the Pottawatomie Community Center. Geared toward children in kindergarten through 6th grade, this new event is similar to the popular “Friday Live!” series but with the addition of programming especially designed for younger children.
“Our fitness committee wanted to offer fun, activity-based events that would appeal to children of different ages,” said Lara Piner, Community Center Supervisor.
With an emphasis on movement through the kind of organized games children know from their time on the playground, “Funky Fit Friday” activities for children in grades 3 through 6 take place in the Pottawatomie Community Center gym while younger participants in kindergarten through 2nd grade can enjoy crafts and games in the upper level arts and activities rooms. And since spring is just around the corner, these “Funky Fit Friday” games such as relay races, freeze dances and tag will help prepare kids for the outdoor fun that comes with warmer weather.
Best yet, parents can drop the kids off at “Funky Fit Friday” and treat themselves to a night out on their own to grab a meal or run some errands, knowing that their children are having fun in a safe, supervised environment.
“Instead of hiring a babysitter for a night out, parents can bring their kids to the park district and let them have a change of pace from stay-at-home activities,” said Piner. “They can run around to their hearts’ content, play with friends and even meet new ones.”
Both groups can enjoy refreshments including pizza, snacks and juices.
The cost of the “Funky Fit Friday” event is $15 per person. Advanced registration is required only at stcparks.org/register. Use code 15024 for K-2nd grade and code 15023 for 3rd-6th graders. For more information, contact Lara Piner at 630-513-4330.
