This fall, make plans with St. Charles Park District as it welcomes both new events and returning favorites.
Both adults and kids can reel in the fun during this catch-and-release fishing event. Taking place from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, September 29 at the East Side Sports Complex pond, the Fishing Derby will provide an opportunity for participants to win prizes and receive awards in such categories as largest fish and best-dressed fisherman.
“The most exciting part of the Fishing Derby is the thrill of competition and the anticipation of catching the biggest fish or the most fish,” said Cayla Greenfield, aquatics, Haines Gymnasium and minigolf manager. “Participants enjoy testing their skills against others, and the suspense of waiting for a big catch can be exhilarating.”
The youth division is open to those 5 to 17 years old. The adult division is for anyone 18 and older. The cost is $20 and advance online registration is required.
The new Light Up the Sky event promises to be an unforgettable evening. Taking place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, October 5, the event will feature a show of illuminated kites zipping and zooming across the night sky as orchestrated by Chicago Kite, a premier kite show producer.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for families and friends to gather and enjoy a fall evening with entertainment,” said Taylor Krawczyk, assistant superintendent of recreation.
In addition to the high-flying performance, the drop-in event will feature a DJ who will play from 6 to 8 p.m. Treats from Sugar Mama’s Mini Donuts food truck will also be available for purchase.
Another family favorite is Ghoulish Gourds On Parade. Community members can share their pumpkin carving or decorating skills when they drop off their pumpkin from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, October 11. Creations will be displayed at the refreshment stand courtyard of River View Miniature Golf Course, and judging will occur the same day during the course’s Ghoulish Golf event from 3 to 9 p.m.
“Patrons can view the pumpkins on display to cast a vote for funniest, spookiest, cutest and people’s choice,” said Lara Piner, Pottawatomie Community Center supervisor and volunteer coordinator.
Ribbons will be awarded to the top finishers. The entry fee is $5 for this all-ages offering.
Happening from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, the Mummy Mile Fun Run is a chance for those of all ages to get a little exercise while getting into the Halloween spirit. Participants are encouraged to follow the path as mummies would, with their arms and legs stretched out. Along the way will be candy and prize stations and the chance to enjoy a snack. A Halloween DIY craft will be available to take home following the event, which will take place at River Bend Community Park. Awards will be presented for the best Halloween costumes.
The cost for the first fun runner in a group is $10, and $7 for all additional individuals.
