When “so you think you can dance” progresses to “you know you can dance,” maybe it’s time to take one’s dance talent to the next level by joining a dance company. The St. Charles Park District’s Dance Company will hold its spring auditions on Monday, May 21, from 6 to 9 PM at the Pottawatomie Community Center. For dancers ages 6 to 18, this audition could be the ticket to an exciting new step in their typical dance routine.
“Not everyone knows that we have a competitive dance team within our dance program,” said Rosie Fasching, Recreation Supervisor. “This is a great opportunity for dancers who want to get more performance and competition experience.”
Dance Company dancers participate in three to five competitions held throughout the Chicagoland area and perform in two to three local competitions per season, including the annual Spring Recital. The Dance Company supports two dance teams: Company 1 for younger dancers; and Company 2 for older and more experienced dancers.
Participating in a dance company can be a logical extension of an already existing dance practice, according to Fasching. Although dancers who wish to take part in the Dance Company auditions need not have rxprednisone been previously enrolled in one of the park district’s classes, they must have prior dance experience.
At the audition, dancers will come prepared by wearing leotards, footed tights, ballet or jazz shoes and have their hair pulled back away from their face. After a warm-up of stretching and other exercises, the group will learn a short choreographed number that will then be performed before a panel of judges. If a dancer has a favorite skill they’d like to demonstrate, that can be part of the audition as well.
Dance company participation is a growing aspect of dance training, attracting more than 3.5 million dancers per year. While the focus of the team is to teach proper techniques and body placement, increase flexibility and balance, it also instills grace, confidence and poise. Being part of a dance group also helps youngsters learn goal setting and time management skills and imparts values such as perseverance, commitment and cooperation.
The Dance Company has a summer session from June through August and a regular session running from September through May.
