Scratch that creative itch with adult art classes this winter through the St. Charles Park District. Through a partnership with Tony & Friends Art Studio, you can choose between a variety of mediums from oil painting to drawing to help bring out that inner artist.
If you’re inspired by the oil paintings of Van Gogh’s Starry Night or da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, learn the proper techniques to create your own painting in Follow the Leader Oil Painting. For three hours once a week, the follow-along class will focus on composition, proportions, brush and knife use and color mixing.
Maybe you’re fascinated with the art of cartooning, admiring the works of Charles Schulz or Matt Groening. Then, register for Cartooning and Character Design to learn the basics of drawing cartoon characters as well as the philosophy and theory behind character design.
Or turn those doodles into drawings with Basic Drawing to learn the phases of drawing techniques, use of various pencils and other mediums, composition, perspective, proportions, shading and more.
The park district also has an Independent Study Workshop for students who want to work on a specific project using a medium of their choice including but not limited to oils, acrylics, soft pastels and charcoal. An experienced instructor will guide students along the way.
Whether you wish to hone your craft or start a new hobby, the benefits of putting pencil to paper or brushing paint over canvas go beyond the finished product.
“What is gained during the process of creating art is just as important, if not more so, than the art itself,” said Sabrina Killeen, Park District Supervisor. “Regardless of what medium is used, making art can reduce stress, improve creative thinking and concentration and give individuals a sense of accomplishment.”
Most classes start in January and February and run for six weeks at various times throughout the week. Basic Drawing has one three-week class starting Thursday, December 6, in addition to classes in 2019. Classes are located at Tony & Friends Art Studio at 333 N. Randall Rd in St. Charles.
Follow the Leader Oil Painting and Basic Drawing are for students ages 14 and older. Independent Study and Cartooning are for students ages 13 and older.
Fees vary by class. For more information and to register, visit www.stcparks.org/register
