Beat the winter blahs this January and get those endorphins flowing by joining an adult sports league at the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles.
With new adult basketball and volleyball leagues for ages 18 and over, it’s easy and convenient to get off the couch and onto the court. Form a team with friends or register as a “free agent” and you’ll be placed on a team with others.
Whether you play either sport recreationally or not at all, everyone is welcome to join a team. “No matter what your experience, you can sign-up for the league,” said Megan Hatheway, Athletic Supervisor.
The socialization and camaraderie of playing a sport you love with friends and making new buddies also can help mentally, especially during the doldrums of winter.
“It’s a great way to keep you active and get your heart rate up while playing a sport you enjoy,” Hatheway said.
The basketball and volleyball leagues were added to the park district’s winter roster based on demand from residents and space at Pottawatomie, she added.
The basketball league will play teams of five players. The teams can be co-ed but are not required. If you’re registering as a free agent, the park district will try to accommodate requests to be on a team with all women or all men.
Basketball teams must have the same color shirt with a number on the back, as well as an alternate color jersey. Games are 20-minute halves with a five-minute halftime. The league meets every Monday from 6:30-9:30pm from January 7 to March 25. The fee is $675 per team.
The volleyball league consists of six players on each team. The teams are required to be co-ed, with a minimum of two girls on the court at all times. The league meets every Sunday from 4-8pm January 6 to March 24. The fee is $400 per team.
The cost includes referees, game ball, on-site staff, set up, equipment and awards. Awards will be given to the top teams in the league and tournament.
