Check out Otter Cove Aquatic Park!

Open to children ages 5 to 16, the Pottawatomie Porpoises Swim Team will race against teams from the Thornwood, Fox Mill, Windings, and Geneva Country Club neighborhoods.  Over the course of an eight-week program, each team will compete head-to-head once, culminating in a championship meet at the end.

Swim league is a great social outlet for participants and parents! It’s affordable and fun, too. Swimmers will have three practices per week and participate in local swim meets to be held on Thursday nights and/or Saturday mornings. Participants receive a team cap and t-shirt.

Swimming is an individual activity and a team sport. Children can easily set and achieve tangible goals. The harder they work, the sooner they’ll notice improvements in fitness and self-confidence.

Cancelled practices due to inclement weather will be made up the week of July 30.

The minimum age requirements for this program are as follows:

Ages 5-8: Swim 25 yards freestyle with face in the water and side-air breathing; 25 yards of backstroke and have a concept of the breaststroke.

Ages 9-10: Swim continuously for 50 yards freestyle with side-air breathing, 50 yards of backstroke and have a concept of breaststroke and butterfly.

Ages 11-16: Swim continuously for 200 yards of freestyle with side-air breathing, 200 yards backstroke and 50 yards breaststroke and butterfly.

Team Colors: Navy Blue and Green

Team T-shirt: Shirts will be handed 1st and 2nd week of practice.

Team Cap: Each participant will be handed a team cap at practice. Replacement caps will be available for purchase $4 per cap.

Team Suit: We have chosen a plain navy blue suit as a team suit this year. You may purchase it on your own. We will also have set up for Kiefer swim shop to attend a practice on June 15 and parents may order a suit through the swim shop.

Information: We will be doing weekly newsletter to update you with any information. We will also be asking for e-mails addresses to send important information to you automatically.

Suit Sizing: June 13, 5:30pm

Picture Day: A picture day has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 20 at 5:30pm at Swanson Pool. The pictures will probably last until 7pm. Please make sure your child is dressed in Team T-shirt and suit. Group and individual pictures will be done. Order forms will be distributed the first week of practice. Please bring order form completed to picture day.

Times for these meets will be set 2 weeks prior to the meet – All Thursday meets are in the evening.

Sign-up: to sign up for the swim meets there will be a sign up posted at each practice 1-1/2 weeks prior to each meet. If you are interested and able to attend, sign up child on form. On top of the form we will list the location and time of swim meet. You must sign up for the meet the week before the meet occurs which gives coaches time to do the line up and get information back to the swimmer. Swimmers will have their swim meet events in their mailbox the Tuesday before each Thursday swim meet.

Volunteers
To successfully run any swim meet, we need parent volunteers. The following are positions that we will need volunteers to work each swim meet. We will put up a meet volunteer sheet each time we post a meet sign up form so that parents may coordinate which to work with the meets that their child is participating in.

Timers: 6-8
This position is located on the pool deck at the end of each lane. Each timer will be assigned a specific lane. You need to be able to operate a stop watch and document times on each child’s card after you time them.

8 & Under Helpers: 2
This position you need to be able to hold kids in place and order and line them up for their events. We only use this for the 8 & under group.

Awards: 2
This position writes the name and time on place and participant ribbons after the results are determined for each event.

Scoring: 1
This position requires good math skills to score meet.

Runners: 1-2
This position requires a lot of walking from one end of the pool to the other to distribute participants' time cards. They are also in charge of taking swimmers' cards from timers to the score table. We only use this position for our home meets.

Check-in/hand writers: 4
This position works only at the beginning of meet. Volunteer will highlight each swimmer's name on a check-in form when they arrive at the meet and then will write their events on their hands.

Events
Each meet may differ slightly but this is the order of events at each of the meets we attend – (Coaches will be in charge of each swimmers entry for each swim meet). Plan on swimmers to swim between 2-4 events each meet.

Inclement Weather
What to do if bad weather occurs before practice:
The coach and pool management will determine if there will be practice. One hour before a practice, you may call Swanson Pool at 630-584-3314 or Pottawatomie Community Center at 630-513-6200 to determine if practice has been cancelled. This decision will not be made prior to 4:30 for night practices and 6:30am for morning practices.

What to do if bad weather occurs during practice:
The coach and pool management will determine to end practice in inclement weather conditions (lightning, thunder, heavy rain…). All patrons will be asked to leave the water and pool deck. The coach and team will be directed into the middle room (staff room) of the Swanson Pool building. Kids will be allowed to call for rides. Coach will remain on site until all participants are picked up.
